  I'll be honest, I had some really high expectations off the bat. By other standards, perhaps they would rate at 4/5. Anyway, I've been twice (once for dinner and another for drinks) and received ho-hum service both times. The food was good (especially their mashed potatoes), but my sausage dish was bland.
  
  My major gripe is with the lack of beer knowledge seen in the waitstaff. I'm a snob when it comes to beer, and I was really hoping that a "Tap House" featuring a nice cross section of beers would also take the time to educate its staff about what the taps are and their various flavors. If you work at a tap house and don't know the beers on said taps like the back of your hand I'm going to leave very unimpressed.

  We were there with a party of 12 over Finals Weekend. The food was quite tasty and the portions were good for the lunch. We divided the bill between one guest and us. However, 12th Street Taphouse incorrectly and illegally duplicated the tip on our credit card payment AFTER we had left. The 20% tip was calculated in the bill, which was fine. However, the other guest paid the tip in his contribution. Therefore, we deliberately did not include the tip in ours. BUT the 12th Street Taphouse changed our credit card amount to suit themselves and to include the 20% tip again (close to $30.00). We are in the process of dealing with the dispute, which should not have happened in the first place. If they thought the amount was incorrect, they should have told us at the time, not when we are 200 miles away!! Very very annoying.

  I ate at this restaurant last week, and it was a very good experience. The woman who helped us was great, and the food was very good (mushroom risotto and meatloaf for my husband). However, I went back this week as part of a large group and the service was some of the worst I've ever had. At one point, about a quarter of the group had empty drinks, and I had to go find the waiter to ask him to come help us. The service went progressively downhill to the point that it was downright rude. The food this time was not as good as my first experience, and one woman in the group who ordered a well-done bison burger was served a medium-rare burger. When she complained, instead of making her a new burger, they just heated the one she had originally been served, which burnt the outside and caused the ketchup and toppings to congeal. It was nothing short of disgusting. Finally, another table complained about their service (someone in our party knew one of the people at that table) and they were told that their service was poor because of us! Which is pretty confusing since we were receiving poor service too. I guess the fact that they tacked on a 20% gratuity and left us no choice but to pay it meant that they didn't need to give great service. Of course, no one from our party of 12 is likely to return.

  My wife and I have made 12th Street Taphouse a regular part of our week, for three reasons. Every plate of food we've had has been outstanding; they have a great selection of beer on tap, including 2 true Belgian beers always; the staff make the effort to establish a great rapport with customers. Do check out the daily entree specials, and don't miss the fried Calamari!
